Best Practice Award winners share their experiences: Integrated Radiological Services

BPPDA full

Integrated Radiological Services (IRS) is a small to medium enterprise mainly providing medical physics and radiation-protection support services to the healthcare industry, but also radiation safety consultancy and regulatory advice to the non-medical field, including the construction, utilities, manufacturing and education sectors.

For IRS, the Best Practice Award recognises not only that we provide a structured career pathway for graduates seeking to use their physics degree in a challenging healthcare environment and the non-nuclear industry, but also provides employment and training opportunities for young scientists who want to try a different career path.

Furthermore, and probably equally importantly, we believe that the training and career opportunities provided through our apprenticeship scheme offer a challenging and interesting environment to people who didn’t anticipate a career in physics.

The Best Practice Award recognises the commitment IRS makes to training and career development, from graduate entry at the apprentice and technical officer grade through to postgraduate qualifications and advancement to scientific-officer grade. The open career structure in IRS, which is complemented by our training programme, has currently resulted in several of our graduate-entry employees progressing to consultant-grade scientists with national recognition as clinical scientists registered with the Health and Care Professions Council and as certificated radiation protection advisers.

From our first involvement with the Best Practice Award in 2007, IRS has grown as an organisation. We have increased our complement of scientists and technicians, which has allowed us to develop specialist teams for specific areas of our business. As a benefit to our company, the award gives existing and prospective clients confidence that we are able to provide a high-quality service with highly trained and competent scientists and technicians. I am convinced that winning the Best Practice Award has contributed to the company’s success and growth.

  • The IOP Best Practice in Professional Development Awards commend, celebrate and promote the very best in training and development opportunities for physicists. If your organisation promotes the continuing professional development of its physicist employees and has a formal career pathway for physicists, enter by 30 June to get the recognition you deserve.
